Optimal time to visit New York in Summer – Best of New York …

May 19th, 2012

New York City estimates 51.5 million visitors will flock to the city this year, filling the ferry boats to the Statue of Liberty and lining up for the rare opportunity to see the Big Apple from above at the Empire State Building. Many of those millions will be in NYC this summer for the great weather, and as New Yorkers flee the city for their own vacations elsewhere; visitors from the U.S. and abroad are happy to take their place!

(However, when it comes to NYC tourism, we’d estimate the low season is just a couple weeks long — likely between New Year’s Day and Martin Luther King Day. If the foot traffic in Times Square is any indicator — an estimated 250,000 tourists and passersby wander through that neon-lit cavern of commerce and culture daily, this city is always a destination for both domestic and international travelers.)

But one of the benefits of planning your trip to NYC in the summer is the number of free outdoor events increases exponentially as the temperature rises (though so do the number of people willing to line up for passes — plan accordingly!). Central Park’s popular “Summer Stage” concert series hosts more than 40 free concerts and events at Rumsey Playfield this summer, including the Metropolitan Opera’s summer recital series (August 8th) and even improv comedy by NYC’s own Upright Citizens Brigade (July 17).  Nearby at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, Shakespeare in the Park celebrates its 50th season of free shows with two productions: “As You Like It” and “Into the Woods” (by Steven Sondheim). While the Delacourte Theater has 1,872 seats, theater-goers can expect to line up for as many as eight hours to get their hands on a coveted free ticket. (Nearly 80,000 people attend Shakespeare in the Park every year!).

Another of this summer’s most-sought-after tickets will be free fan passes to the Today Show’s Friday morning concert series (last year Chris Brown drew nearly 20,000 fans to the outdoor plaza at Rockefeller Center in the early morning hours. He performs again this summer on June 8). Usher kicks off the concert series this Friday (May 18) with a performance outside the Today Show studio at Rockefeller Plaza. Other highlights of the series this summer include Justin Bieber (June 15), Kenny Chesney (June 22) and Train (August 24).

While you’re waiting in line for free passes to any of the above events, consider yourself lucky if one of NYC’s 3,000 food trucks is parked nearby. This trend in outdoor eating is growing with each passing summer in New York, and in nearly every neighborhood. Many of the most popular trucks vary their location day to day. We suggest the Kimchi Taco Truck, which is often parked in SoHo or Midtown Manhattan.  (Though with more than 23,000 restaurants in NYC, we know there’s no shortage of fabulous — and air-conditioned! — places to eat indoors too).

Though the average July high temperature in New York is an agreeable-sounding 84 degrees F (28 Celsius), NYC is almost always humid from June through September. So to avoid heat exhaustion, do as the New Yorkers do: hit up one of the city’s museums for a cool blast of air-conditioning as you take in a little culture. A walk through the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s marble-lined Greek and Roman Art exhibit will help keep your temperature down. Or linger at the American Museum of Natural History, where the only thing cooler than the collection of animals and artifacts is the A/C! Or maybe, Porgy and Bess is an appropriate choice for New York this season with the classic song “Summertime.”

What’s your favorite thing to do in the Summer in New York City?

Things to do: to Celebrate Memorial Day in NY – Best of New York …

May 19th, 2012

While Memorial Day on its own is a solemn holiday in the U.S., commemorating those who have died in service to their country, this three-day weekend is the official kick-off to summer in New York City.

So whether you choose to spend the holiday in remembrance or enjoying one of the free and fun events around the city with friends or family, there’s something for everyone on Memorial Day in NYC.

Fleet Week always falls on Memorial Day weekend, with free events that invite members of the public to both mingle with the military and see the ships they call home. The week of festivities culminates Monday with a ceremony at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, on the flight deck of this out-of-commission aircraft carrier located at Pier 86 on the West Side of Manhattan. Starting at 11 a.m., the ceremony includes a wreath-laying and the annual unfurling of a 100-foot-long American flag.

Elsewhere in NYC, a number of parades invite onlookers to cheer for the men and women who make up our Armed Forces and enjoy the music of military bands. In Upper Manhattan, the Memorial Day parade marches north from Broadway and Dyckman Street to Inwood Hill Park, located at the very northern tip of Manhattan. Large crowds of local families and veterans gather to watch the procession, which includes school marching bands and Little League teams marching alongside members of the Armed Forces. Across the East River in Brooklyn, that borough’s Memorial Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. at Third Avenue and 87th Street in Bay Ridge.

Meanwhile in Queens, the Little Neck–Douglaston parade is reportedly the largest of its kind. That parade, to be lead by honorary Grand Marshall Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2012, starts at 2 p.m. at Northern Boulevard and Jayson Street in Great Neck.

After a patriotic morning or afternoon spent honoring fallen service members, we can’t think of a better all-American activity than heading to the ballpark for a home game. Singing the “Star Spangled Banner” at Citi Field in Queens (the New York Mets’ home field) will never be sweeter — and you may even find yourself sitting next to a service member (with so many in the city for Fleet Week, you can bet that a few will take the time to see one of NYC’s ball teams take the field). On Monday, May 28, 2012, the Mets take on the Phillies at 1:10 p.m.

Music fans, meanwhile, may enjoy extending the reverent mood of Memorial Day with the annual free evening concert by the New York Philharmonic at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.

Many of New York’s museums are typically closed on Mondays, but for the holiday the Metropolitan Museum of Art will open its doors from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with special programs for families and children, including the opportunity to sketch some of your favorite artworks. All Holiday Monday programs at the Met are free with admission.

Memorial Day weekend also marks the opening of the free ferry to Governor’s Island. A former U.S. Army post and National Monument for its role in the Revolutionary War, this island in New York Harbor is now a favorite among New Yorkers looking to escape the city for a slice of greenery amid 18th-century forts.

Located just a half-mile from Lower Manhattan, the ferry to Governor’s Island is just a quick ride from the Battery Maritime Building located at 10 South Street, adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in Lower Manhattan. On the holiday Monday, the Governor’s Island ferry runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Though normally you have to pay to rent a bike from Bike and Roll to cycle around the 172-acre island, on holiday Mondays bikes are always free.

Happy Memorial Day!

?? Who is throwback jerseys there false news? I is cool trick bother anyone?
Things have been throwback jerseys said in Manhattan, has been sporadically made a Manhattan sightseeing car photos, but unfortunately, that is, has no time and opportunity to focus on the Manhattan sightseeing car show.
For example, the throwback jerseys last thing I read in the Shanghai World Expo advertising in Manhattan, “Ray,” related to a few tourist cars (that ridiculous ad is posted on the sightseeing car), but because that day is written to the Expo advertising, so there is no detailed to introduce sightseeing car. Sightseeing car pictures shot that day did not spend. Haha today finally have the chance. Good for everyone to see these weird kinds of tourist vehicles.
?? tourists on throwback jerseys the bus
?? tourists to throwback jerseys Africa in the tourism front, chat, or photo shoot that day, wearing the same clothes, getting dressed every day in the United States of unwritten rules Oh.
Speaking of Manhattan, throwback jerseys came to New York will know they must sightseeing car. I believe many of my friends have come here sitting on these sightseeing car, you were not very interesting? Have not taken the friends it does not matter Ha, now sounds to show you the same!

My office on throwback jerseys Fifth Avenue in Manhattan, 40th Street, next to Times Square, we often see some strange things to work will always come across those sightseeing car, with visitors from around the world tour of Manhattan .
Sightseeing car full throwback jerseys of people, car people look at the scenery outside the car to see if they (we have them and the car as a mobile landscape to enjoy).
?? this car, throwback jerseys too fancy, right?
?? body of throwback jerseys the vehicle is a Chinese beauty!
?? New York throwback jerseys Fashion Week advertising
Precisely because of throwback jerseys this many of the tourist vehicles, Manhattan more colorful and charming.
The tourist car throwback jerseys driving route covering Manhattan’s main tourist attractions: Times Square, Empire State Building, Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Broadway, Rockefeller Center, Lincoln Center, Columbia University and the Wall Street and other famous scenic spots. Driving 15 hours from 8:00 am to 11 pm along its fixed-line, there are many sites available for visitors to get on and off at any time, free transfer is not subject to time and the number of constraints, and can listen to electronic explain. A day trip over one hundred kilometers per vehicle per day on average with 800-1000 people ride. Some sightseeing car, visitors can also by “day pass” day passes are free to get off on the 55 stations in Manhattan and one days.

?? this is throwback jerseys a sightseeing car car
Some to online throwback jerseys users in New York: New York – an alien city, “said:” less than New York does not know and tall buildings, less than Times Square do not know the neon lights in the end what is dazzling. ”
Indeed, the neon throwback jerseys of Times Square, always so bright, the exposure here, you will notice the passage of time. There is no day and night divided, then dark night, where the lights will be street lit Akira as day, the streets of the surging crowd, made you forget the rest.
Perhaps you will throwback jerseys say that I am bragging. Okay, I said not to see the description of the users:
Street painting artists throwback jerseys of different nationalities, the uncle of the hot dog, black brothers in the LV store opposite openly sell pirated handbags are to attract tourists coming and going all over the world, the streets in the middle of the night 12:00, there is simply more lively than during the day! ”
?? full of throwback jerseys neon lights of the Manhattan street and see a yellow arches, it is the McDonald’s logo, but unfortunately only half of the
In a crowded, throwback jerseys bustling place, only to stand high in order to see far ahead, to see the whole, how can the less lovely sightseeing cars?
?? to see throwback jerseys people sitting on a two-tier tourist car above the street scene, a glance.
?? I do throwback jerseys not take a pleasure in this street to go, it really is in addition to the people could not see anything!
?? large taxi? throwback jerseys Map, there are lines on the window, like $ 25
So, tourists come throwback jerseys here, there will always be to take a sightseeing car. In the office before, I can always see a pick one of the tourist vehicles passing by, sitting above the great variety of people (really a great variety, what color are). They always put the eyes were wide with excitement look around. The hands holding the camera, ready to take pictures, as if the fear of missing anything interesting. Sometimes, the side of the road waved to them, they will be a passionate response.
Perhaps, next time throwback jerseys I will see you in the car, do not forget I waved

Sivan Askayo: Barcelona, One More Time (PHOTOS)

May 17th, 2012

It is not a hard thing to fall in love with Barcelona. In fact, it is quite easy.

This combination of a civilized European city with a Catalan sort of rudeness can make anyone fall in love with this city immediately.

If you are about to spend few days in Barcelona this summer, here are few tips for you.

Last summer I spent (only) five days in Barcelona mainly for work (photography) and partly to walk in the footsteps of Gaudi, Miro and Picasso. I did some homework to know what I wanted to see, though when I travel and visit another city, I hardly if ever make any plans and prefer to go with the flow and find my own way back. My only agenda was to take on Barcelona as much as possible, eat tapas you can’t find anywhere in the world, follow the Arts of Picasso, Gaudi and my favorite Miro and feel like I was one of the actors in one of Almadovar movies.

And my plan worked!

I spent most of my time in the Gracia neighborhood, the magical area between Avinguda Diagonal and Passeig de Gracia. For me, Gracia was the Barcelona equivalent to the West Village in New York, so in a way, I was a bit biased.

Gracia is, without a doubt, the playground or the backyard of Gaudi. In a short radius in the neighborhood, one can find the Casa Mila, Casa Batlló and the “will never be completed” church, La Sagrada Familia. My important recommendation, which is valid everywhere in Barcelona is to keep your head up and eyes open, exploring the balconies with the colorful tiles, the paintings on the buildings, the sculpted rooftops and the good looking Spanish guys walking toward you in the streets. Of course I recommend to keep your eyes open on your bags and valuables because Barcelona is well known (unfortunately) for its streets muggers.

I stayed in a cute and well designed boutique hotel, located right on Mallorca street. Like most of the streets in this area, Mallorca is such a pictorial street. A tree-lined street with several cafes, it most importantly has a bakery which sells delicious home-made cakes and chocolates. Do not let the front of the hotel fool you. This is not another building in a residential neighborhood. The hotel rooms look like they came out of any European design magazine and everything is full of chic and class, as only the Catalans know. There’s nothing like waking up every morning in a room with a huge window overlooking the street and smell the bread being baked in the bakery below.

Note to self: Do not even think you can see all of Barcelona in five days, by foot. As a typical New Yorker who walks a lot, I am often amused when I see a crowded tourist bus passing down Broadway. I promised myself that when I visit a city, I would never get on a tourist bus. Well. I couldn’t keep my promises, and I found myself one morning on one of these buses. As someone who always prefers to walk the streets, I highly recommend riding one of these buses at least once, to explore the city.

These buses can be found on Placa de Catalunya and all bus companies offer more or less the same routes, perhaps with minor changes in ways and turns. This is an excellent opportunity to reach the hills of Barcelona, Park Guell, Tibidabo and the area of Sarria, an old neighborhood, a little further from the center. Wandering the alleys of Sarria made me feel like I was in a picturesque rural town from old times. It was also during the siesta time, so maybe that’s why…

No doubt that all the wandering in the streets have increased my appetite. I was still keeping my agenda to explore Barcelona but also discover its food and eat.

Gracia is packed with great restaurants and tapas bars. In fact, I think most of the well-designed and high-end restaurants are concentrated in this neighborhood. Unfortunately, five days were not enough to sample and taste all the places I have marked to myself as a “must visit,” but the ones I did visit were really worth it.

Moo restaurant in Hotel Omm and Principal restaurant, which are both located near Casa Mila, were great choices. Combining the dining with a view of the city from Casa Mila’s rooftop at dusk was a winner!

Bar Lobo, with its long communal tables was also a great choice and alternative for late lunch or an early dinner. Watching the people walking by while munching on tapas and drinking red wine is a “must do.”

And don’t forget the beach, which is a great experience by itself. Five days are not enough in Barcelona, but if you skip the siestas and somehow manage to skip the long lines, you may see plenty.

Ways to experience the Empire State Building – Best of New York …

May 13th, 2012

When it comes to iconic New York landmarks, the Empire State Building can’t be beat for two good reasons: not only is it the city’s most stunning and recognizable example of Art Deco architecture and one of the “Seven Wonders of the Modern World,” but as the tallest building in New York City, it also affords the best 360-degree views of Manhattan and beyond.

So when you’re planning a trip to NYC, consider how you want to see this 1,454-foot-tall marvel in Manhattan; there’s more than one way to enjoy the Empire State Building — both inside and out.

Of course, visiting the Empire State Building’s 86th floor observatory is an experience you don’t want to miss. (And if the line-up is any indication, neither does anyone else! That’s why we recommend buying your tickets in advance: you’ll save yourself the trouble of waiting in one more line. Of course, you can’t avoid the security check at the Empire State Building, but planning your trip to the top around the slowest hours for tourist traffic can help cut back on the wait).

Located high above Midtown Manhattan on 34th Street, the Empire State Building’s observation deck offers panoramic views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and even New Jersey. From Uptown to Central Park to the Financial District in Lower Manhattan, you can see it all from the Empire State Building’s 86th-floor observation deck. In fact, on a clear, sunny day, you can see as far as 80 miles in any direction with five states within view from up high on the Empire State Building! And if romance is on your itinerary, there’s no better place to set the mood than up on the observation deck at night, with the twinkling lights of the NYC skyline as a glamorous backdrop for your sky-high rendezvous.

And in your rush to the top, don’t discount the appeal of incredible Art Deco details in the Empire State Building’s lobby, elevator, and indoor waiting areas. Design aficionados will love the aluminum relief of the skyscraper in the lobby, as well as the original elevators and an ornate mural on the entryway’s three-storey ceiling.

Another popular attraction located right in the Empire State Building gives visitors a view of the landmark you can’t get anywhere else. NYSkyride uses special effects and high-definition video to take  “passengers” on a ride they will never forget, flying over 30 famous city sights, including the Empire State Building. NYSkyride is New York City’s only tour by aerial simulator, and is a great introduction to the city for newcomers, who will enjoy circling the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, Yankee Stadium, and Central Park. The NYSkyride Combo lets you explore both the Empire State Building Observatory and the NYSkyride.

The Empire State Building is the most photographed landmark in the world, and it may surprise you to learn that some of the best pictures can be had from afar — on a boat. Many of the boat cruises you can book focus on New York Harbor, Lower Manhattan and Statue of Liberty views. But Circle Line Sightseeing’s Three-Hour Full Island Tour circumnavigates the entire island of Manhattan, so you will have two chances to enjoy great views (and photo opps!) of the Empire State Building as the boat makes its way up the East River past 34th Street, around the northern tip of Manhattan and back down the Hudson River, past the Empire State Building in Midtown Manhattan for a second time. As you pass by this historic landmark on a boat you will gain a true appreciation for its dramatic place in the New York City skyline.

Once you see the Empire State Building in person you will understand why it has inspired so many artists to render this iconic skyscraper in an array of mediums. At the New York Historical Society you can see some of the best works inspired by New York’s most famous landmark, including Victor Perelli’s “Empire State Building, N.Y.C.,” a stately depiction of the Empire State Building standing against turbulent skies. The New York Historical Society exhibit “Portraits of the City” offers visitors a selection of city views, from the historic engraving  “A Southeast Prospect of the City of New York,” circa 1756-1761, to Jacquette’s “From World Trade Center, 1998.” Also included in this artistic tribute to NYC are portraits of political and cultural figures, as well as artwork depicting the lives of typical New Yorkers.

However you choose to enjoy New York City’s most iconic landmark, we know it will put you in an Empire State of Mind.
